Famagusta - City Guide


The histories of Cyprus cities go back to ancient periods. There are cities surviving with sometimes experiencing bright days and sometimes losing their value as well as cities collapsed, burned and only a trace is left behind like Salamis, Curium, Lapithos, Amathus.  

It is said that Magusa is founded by one of Ptolemus kings Philadelphus in 3rd century BC and that he had given the new city his sister’s name Arsinoe. The city Salamis, getting bigger with the people migrating from there in 648 BC because of the Arabs burning and collapsing has become a small seaboard city. It is known that, the city’s name has been changed as “Ammohostos” meaning hidden under sand in the period with the hope that Arabs not to be found.

Currency and Banking in North Cyprus

The currency in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is Turkish Lira (TL in short) and exchange rates are fixed on a daily basis by the Central Bank of Northern Cyprus. Because of the close ties to Turkey, banking in North Cyprus is modelled on th Turkish system.

 

The banking system has been modernised and re-structured over recent years because of increasing tourism and economic growth. The Central Bank takes responsibility for monetary, credit and exchange policy, and acts as banker to the government.

 

Transfers of funds, including those in foreign currencies, are allowed both by private individuals and companies. Alongside Turkish and Turkish-Cypriot banks, the HSBC has branches in all cities of Northern Cyprus.

Cyprus Border Crossing

Border Crossing between North Cyprus and South Cyprus

 

There are no longer any restrictions on border crossings for EU citizens in Cyprus, as of 2003. People from both sides are crossing the border on a daily basis for working, shopping, tourism, business and so on. EU citizens are free to cross and spend as much time as they wish on either side of the border by producing their ID cards or passports at crossing points any time of the day (24 hrs).

 

At present, there are five crossing points where pedestrians can cross, Ledra Palace and Ledra Street (Lokmaci) border gates in Lefkoşa (Nicosia), whilst those who intend to cross by vehicle can use the Metehan (Kermia) border gate in Lefkoşa, Beyarmudu (Pile) near the British Sovereign bases at Dhekelia and the Akyar border gates near Gazimağusa ( Famagusta) on the Larnaca-Famagusta road.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus can be reached by both sea and air.
By Air; Cyprus Turkish Airlines, Turkish Airlines provide an important network from international airports to Ercan via Turkey. Or via Southern Cyprus (but one needs a visa). For the timetables, prices and information, inquiries can be made at the offices of the above mentioned airlines and also from the travel agents and foreign representatives.
